When The Mental Bar opened toward the end of last year in San Diego’s Black Arts and Culture District, its owners sought to provide more than just a cup of coffee to its neighbors. “We noticed in San Diego specifically, that the southeast portion doesn’t have spaces where the community can come together,” said co-owner Tommy Walker. “If you look at all the coffee shops, for the most part they are all to the west of the 15 freeway. Every single last one of them. And it’s considered more affluent areas where there’s a little bit more money.”
