In December, Sweet Chive opened on an increasingly crowded section of East Cesar Chavez. When I visited the counter-service restaurant on a rainy Friday evening in January, the space didn’t feel quite settled-in yet—it still had a few empty shelves and very bright white walls—but it was bustling and beckoning. Owner and chef Phoenix Pai grew up in Taiwan eating foods prepared by her Manchuria-born parents, and Sweet Chive’s menu reflects the span of her personal geography, with dishes ranging from Chinese Lion’s Head Soup to Lou Rou Fan (Taiwanese braised pork) and Pork-Stuffed Eggplant.
