Portland’s hot pot scene just got a little more interesting. Hot Pot King, a new restaurant backed by New York investors, held its grand opening Sunday in Happy Valley. The restaurant -- no relation to Seattle’s Hot Pot King best known for its beef tallow teddy bears -- offers the usual array of vegetables, mushrooms, meat and seafood, all a la carte, plus a few less commonly seen options, including pig’s brains, sliced abalone and a baller seafood combo priced at $57 (see a photo of the opening week menu below). Customers dip each ingredient in their pick of a half-dozen broths, each pot placed on sleek built-in hot plates and wrapped in pretty porcelain protectors, a setup that reminds me of the format at The Dolar Shop chain.
